A Few of My Favourite Things...

Edward Fox  the Jackal (the original!)

His brother James is an actor too, and brother Robert, a film director, Edward Fox is famous for his role as the mysterious assassin who is tasked to kill De Gaulle - the very poor remake with Bruce Willis is a waste of time! Fred Forsyth's original book is utterly compelling. Fox continues to be a wonderful actor even now in his 70s.

Edward Fox         Strictly... Tom Chambers - mmm!

Strictly Come Dancing's 2008 Champion despite vote-rigging, judges' prejudice and some very bad dancing from other people, Derbyshire's own Tom Chambers, aka Sam Strachan (BBC's Holby City) was voted outright WINNER by the public. Tom lives in the Derwentside village of Darley Dale - he is best known for his womanising doctor character who sets hearts fluttering.  In reality, Tom is a true romantic, having married his childhood sweetheart, Clare just a few weeks ago.  Describing himself as 'so jammy' to have married her, Tom really deserves to play a perfect romantic lead next!

Andrew Castle - ex-no1 tennis ace and GMTV presenter

Although now in his forties, fit and smart Andrew Castle also had a go at dancing.  Andrew proved he had a mite more talent than his female colleagues! Famously leading Swedish champion 2-0 in a Wimbledon final, as happens to many British tennis hopes, Andrew lost eventually to his rival.  Born in Surrey in 1963, a commentator, jogger, father of two and again, self-confessed romantic, who says his wife put him on an even keel, Andrew is game, set and match to remain a firm favourite.

Paul Darrow - aka Kerr Avon of Blake's Seven

I loved the sarky space-rebel, Avon, who only ever did anything to suit himself, which we loved, just like JR.  Blake's Seven was a fantasic pre-CGI sci-fi series of the 1970s-80s, which went on for five seasons - ending in Avon being surrounded by Federation troops with all his crew dead around him, believing he had been betrayed by his former captain, Roj Blake.  Did he survive? Like the end of The Italian Job, no-one knows! So far, all attempts to resurrect the series a-new have failed, but the likes of BBC7 have been great in creating radio plays using elements of storyline from the series.

Another slightly in-love-with-himself sci-fi hero is Jack Harkness, but Jack's a self-confessed coward and hustler, well, until he got in tow with Dr Who and Torchwood that is!  Better known in previous incarnations as a song and dance stage performer, John Barrowman who was born in Glasgow, on the same day but a few years earlier, than me.  Weird to hear him speak Glaswegian!! John says his American accent was developed as a defence mechanism to cope with being teased when he moved to the States in his childhood.  I think we all wouldn't have fancied him the same if he sounded like he should be in River City!!

Serial Adventurer, Nicholas Crane, have umbrella, will travel!

I'm a sucker for a cute geek! Nick Crane, star of Map Man, Coast, Great British Adventures etc is the most gorgeous man with specs and a brolly that couuld ever be! Nick's a cyclist, geographer, historian and outdoors man.  One of his most entertaining books I have read is Two Degrees West, which kept me going when I was up late writing my dissertation in 2005!

This real-life hero was born in Hastings and won the Mungo Park Medal in 1992 by the Scottish Geographical Society (Park being a very famous Scottish pioneer explorer).

I also like Ray Mears and Bear Grylls, but judging by the online wars over whose best between the two o them, I'm not getting into it! They are both brilliant! Ray for his no-nonsense, learn from the earth and its ancient societies approach, to Bear's mad Andy-McNab-gung-ho-jump-off-cliffs thrill-seekers' attitiude which suits the 21st century adrenaline junkie.

Bear Grylls - mad as a box of frogs                  Ray Mears - cuddly but practical

Lolcatz!! - a great new discovery of silliness
